How to Putt Better to Lower Your Scores

Putting Tips to Slash Your 3-Putts

Everyone can use some advice on how to putt better. We have all had those days when the hole looks 12 inches across, and other days when it is smaller than a golf ball. It’s a part of the game that is probably more mental than physical, but no matter how good your mental approach is if your putting technique is inconsistent, you have no chance of being a great putter.  For more on your total short game, visit our page golfshortgames.com/.

Eliminate Your Three Putts Once and For All

Tiger Woods Putting Stroke

Completely eliminate the 3-putt probably isn’t possible, but it is possible to make it a rarity. And it isn’t very often that any of us will concede that a 3-putt is a good result. A few of the reasons for the hated 3-putt are: a bad misread of the green, losing concentration on a putt and therefore a wasted stroke, becoming too aggressive on the first putt requiring a difficult second, and missing the comeback putt. Any of these reasons can be corrected with correct technique or a better approach to the putt.

Master of Putting

In the putting as an art we talk about five ways to overcome problems that will cause you miss those short putts. So much of putting involves technique, but so much also involves the mental approach you must take to how to putt better. With some discipline and hard work anyone can nearly eliminate the 3-putt.

How to Putt Better Also Involves the Right Putter for You

Choosing the right putter for you is something we rarely talk much about, but there are reasons some putters are better for some people than others. It will depend on your preferred putting stroke, and we all have one. You may end up battling your putter instead of feeling like it belongs in your hands if you don’t start out with the right one.

Below is a five minute video on breaking putts, and taking the mystique out of them. Learning how to read the break is the hardest part of learning how to putt better, and as the video demonstrates, once you know the break, every putt really is a straight putt, at least in your mind. Take a look at it for an excellent look on the pendulum stroke.

How to Strike a Golf Ball Consistently

Things to Make You Strike a Golf Ball Consistently

As we begin getting into nice weather and begin getting that yearning to get back to our golf game, where must our focus be?  Perhaps a question that should be asked prior to that is: what is actually the most important aspect to strike a golf ball consistently?   If you ever want to play good golf, you have to practice and it is best to get some qualified advice.

But for me the most important part of striking a ball is “ball contact”.  The crispness of the way you hit a ball will not only determine your distance, but your accuracy.  Anytime you hit the ball with a glancing blow will take distance from your golf ball flight, and if it is hit with side spin, the ball is going to form either left or right.  That’s not automatically bad, as long it is controlled and you can understand what you’re doing.

Regardless of the Shot, Ball Contact Is Key

Being able to constantly make great contact on the golf ball will optimize the outcomes of your shot greater than anything.  So what could you do to best work on to consistently strike a shot?  I accomplish that using the pitching wedge.  The reasons:

1.    Being an iron, they have a similarity with other irons in your bag, so as you move down in loft ball-strike is essentially the same.

2.    It’s a adaptable club when you learn the different ways to use it.  You can work popping a shot high or take the spin of the ball and let it run, all depending on how you strike your ball.

3.    You can train in a comparatively small area, and it doesn’t even cost you the purchase price of a bucket of range balls.  With eight or ten balls and a little space on the practice green it is possible to hit a lot of golf balls in a short period of time.

What goes into the golf swing is important, but that instant that you come into contact with a golf ball is the payoff for all which goes into the swing.  You may have the most perfect back swing or a picture-perfect follow through, but when you hit an inch behind the ball it isn’t going especially far.  So my bit of advice, particularly when you are just getting back in the swing of things and getting callouses on your hands again is: simply hit short golf shots with an abbreviated golf swing.  As soon as it starts to feel natural again, start building yourself for a full swing.

Improve Your Sand Shots Around the Green

7 Tips to Improve Your Sand Shots

Bunker shots scare most golfers, so before you can improve your sand shots you must develop confidence. That of course comes with practice. Golf pros and low handicap amateurs prefer to be in a bunker instead of long grass nearby the green. The main reason for this is it’s simpler to manage spin and distance from a bunker. A golf bunker shot requires displacing the sand under the golf ball instead of striking the golf ball itself. Let’s focus on how to hit more consistent sand shots and boost our bunker play.

Clip the Tee

Pretend there is a tee under the golf ball. Focus on clipping the tee and not hitting at the ball. This will alleviate any nervousness you may have about leaving the golf ball in the bunker. Make sure you see a spot under the ball once it has left its place.

Move the Sand

The only objective when striking a bunker shot is to move the sand. Don’t consider hitting the golf ball. Rather, focus on moving the sand under the ball. Remember, the sand should propel the ball ahead without the club face ever creating contact with the golf ball. You’ll get up and down more over and shave strokes off your score.

Stay Aggressive

Take a nice long golf swing and follow through. Be aggressive with your tempo. Don’t be afraid to generate a powerful swing at the ball. Lastly, see the ball go into the hole.

Open Your Club face and Stance

For a fundamental golf bunker shot, open up the club face and then take the grip. This will result in proper club and hand position at impact. Next, open your stance and play the golf ball off your left heel. This will assure the club face stays open. Remember, swing through the ball and not at the ball, and the higher loft of the sand wedge will pop the ball up.

Weight on Left Side

Start off with your weight on the left side and retain it there. Don’t sway during the back swing.

Light Grip Pressure

Maintain light grip pressure all through the swing. This will permit the club head to swing with no manipulation and lead to a high shot landing softly on the green. The affect will be much more control of the golf ball from the bunker.

Consistent Back Swing Length

Use a back swing of similar length for green-side bunker play. Constantly regulate the distance you wish the ball to carry by the length of your follow through.

Maintain Flex in Knees

Keep the knees flexed through the golf swing and maintain a consistent golf club head position. Dig the feet into the sand to assure a strong base for the swing.

Most important, don’t try to help the ball from the sand and let your club do the work. The next time you practice your bunker play work on these bunker fundamentals. Devote one hour or so weekly working on your golf bunker play and you will enhance your sand shots and decrease your scores.

Calculate Golf Handicap- How to Calculate (and Understand) It

Taking the Mystery Out of Calculating the Golf Handicap

The reason we calculate golf handicap is are quite simple: it gives golfers a score that is adjusted with our ability to play.  This handicapped total then allows us to compete with presumably any other golfer, professional or beginner.  For example, if my golf handicap is 12, and I would like to challenge Rory McIlroy to a round of golf, we’d  compete by the handicap method.  Obviously if I played Rory 100 times even up, he will without a doubt beat me every time.  However my 12 handicap ought to even the playing field.

Based on my 12 handicap, I’d get a stroke for all of the twelve most demanding golf holes on the course, if McIlroy will be carrying a zero handicap, making him a “scratch” golfer.  It is possible to own a handicap lower than zero, also referred to as a plus handicap.  Given that he is one of the best players in the world, he probably carries a plus handicap, which means that I’d be given more golf holes where I would get a stroke.  This handicap number for every hole can be found on the golf card which has each hole been given a number beginning  at one to eighteen.  The most difficult golf hole on the course would be number one, number 18 is the easiest.

How to Arrive at Your Handicap Number

So now that you know the reasons you’d want to establish a handicap, just how can we obtain that number?  You would think it is pretty standardized, but it is not.  Probably the simplest, and by far your best way in my opinion to arrive at a handicap is to input your information into a computer at the golf course.  It maintains a record of the scores, and tells you what your handicap is.  However here’s what is behind those numbers.

In the United States golf handicaps will be calculated using a few variables.  These are a player’s scores over his most up-to-date rounds, plus the course rating and slope from those rounds.  Each golf course will use a course ratings score, usually between 67 and 77.  This is a number based on a “good” score shot by a scratch golfer.  It will also be given a slope rating, that being a figure between 55 and 155 that describes the relative difficulty of a course for any bogey golfer (one over par for every hole).

Both course and slope ranking will be given on each scorecard (see the illustration above), and with a rather complex formulation this course handicap system is going to go into the golfer’s handicap index.  A golfer’s handicap index will be calculated using the average from the top ten differentials in the player’s previous twenty rounds.  If the course rating is 69.3, the course slope is 117 along with the golfer’s handicap index is 10.5, the formula is (10.5 X 117) / 113 = 11.  That would be the golfer’s handicap for the round.

In the United Kingdom there’s a company that will officially registers golf handicaps called Elite Golf Solutions.  For folks who aren’t club members they will supply a documented golf handicap certificate.  You’ll send your golf scorecards, or else copies of them, and they compute then update your golf handicap like a golf club will.  They then send you a certificate that is the size of a credit card.  It’s also good that they keep an entire stats package for a person’s entire game.  Many courses such as St. Andrews Old Course require them before you step on the first tee.

As I stated earlier, it is simpler to download your scores into the golf course computer to find your handicap and allow it to do the job.  Check out more articles and information on the website http://golflonggame.com/.

Bunker Play- It’s Not that Hard

The Bunker Has to be Played with Confidence

What is it about bunker play that throws many amateur golfers into angst, while professionals see that as their best option to approach a hole and purposely play for a bunker? The answer is that it is not that difficult of a shot if you know what you’re doing, and if you don’t it can be a nightmare. Whether a ball is plugged or setting up, almost any ball can be played, and there is a technique to play it.

My guess is most of those that have trouble with bunker play are not fully aware what the club is supposed to be doing in relation to the sand and the ball. And with that uncertainty they depend on luck to get out. They are just in there to hit it, hope for the best, and get out as quickly as possible.

Understand the Design of a Sand Wedge

bunker play

flange of a sand wedge

When you compare the head of a sand wedge to that of your other irons, two things will be noticeable: the degree of loft will be greater and the club head will have a flange, or (as in the photo to the right) extra weight to allow the club to cut through the sand more smoothly. This was the brain-child of Gene Sarazen, one of the top golfers in the 1920s and 30s. Before that time, players used what was called a spoon, or a high lofted club, to scoop the ball out of sand.

During that period club innovations were becoming more prominent, but some, like the concave face to get out of sand, were deemed illegal. Sarazen’s idea was a straight club face with the flange on the bottom. The innovation quickly took hold, and nothing to this point has really replaced it.

How to Use the “Bounce” to Hit this Shot

The key is to use the bounce. This flange described above, when it hits the sand, will prevent the club from digging in, allowing the leading edge of the club to bounce off the sand. Without the bounce, your club would just keep digging into the soft sand, come out the other side, and your ball would move maybe two inches.

Golf’s Best-Kept SecretsTo play the shot, think about having the flange hit the sand first behind the ball about three inches. Position the ball in the center or front center of your stance, so you are still slightly descending in your swing. Too far back in the stance and the flange will not get to the sand first, causing the leading edge to dig in. Too far forward and the flange will hit with too much of a glancing blow, and the leading edge of the club will hit the ball squarely.

Of course there are different types of sand, and we will discuss plugged, or buried shots, as well as different types of sand to hit from, in not buried shots. Let say you are in sand that hasn’t been raked after a hard rain, that flange will not dig in and cause the club to bounce directly into the ball.   Sand play requires you to be a bit creative, but understanding the principles will allow you to end your phobia with sand.

Golf Lessons- How You Can Teach Yourself at Home

How You May Use Golf Lessons at Home

In order to become good at golf, it has to be practiced. There is a way to use golf lessons at home to save yourself time, and possibly money.  I’m sure this has happened to you? You might have a couple of hours free, so you jump in the vehicle, drive to the golf club or local golf range, get geared up with golf equipment, balls and a plan for the things you’ll work on, and it begins to rain. We all know the feeling. We believe there is a better, more time-proficient way to put in the required time to prepare for the sport we love with indoor golf training.

The Seven Personalities Of Golf

The Seven Personalities Of Golf

Let us agree that golf, which is an out of doors game, should be practiced outdoors. There are some elements of golf which can’t be duplicated unless the golfer is on the golf course. Likewise, a high level basketball player has to get on the court with a ball along with a hoop to play at his optimum level. But that same person spends countless hours off the court doing fitness training, watching film, and performing other skill-related drills to boost his game. Devoid of that off-court regulation the person would not have the ability to play to his top level.

Golf Lessons Aren’t Necessarily by a Golf Instructor

Similarly, an agenda to take your game to the top level should be a feature in using all resources at your disposal. For that reason an excellent, well planned off-course training agenda should be a significant chunk of your golf preparation. Let us examine a few of the benefits resulting from a solid golf lessons program that is home-centered:

1.    Time. Time lost in driving to the place you practice, hopeful the driving range hasn’t been closed or it begins to rain, could be better used for training.
2.    Expense. Even a bucket of balls these days is not cheap, and when you are going to use private instructors, you might get into big bucks.  It does not cost a great deal to work on the putting stroke in your own home with a putter, some balls and a strip of low-knap carpet.
3.    Convenience. You could be perfecting your game in the middle of the night, or in the wintry weather when your area you practice is beneath a foot of snow.
4.    Differing points of view. Online there are many professional teachers to choose from, and each have a unique style of teaching.
5.    Broad based. There are online golf training applications that offer not just with techniques enhancing the short and long game, but mental and physical training exercises specifically designed for the golfer. In order for home golf training to work, some self-discipline will be necessary. But if you are going to work to improve your game wherever, would not the same apply?

There are numerous training devices for golf lessons that can be found online that will help you hone your swing.  From relatively cheap devices which will have you work on your tempo to complex mechanisms that can help you putt.  Plus there are additional videos and full-length training programs that can truly be beneficial.  If you’re truly dedicated to enhancing your game and lowering your score, a great deal of the work may be done without leaving your home.

How to Be a Golf Instructor- It Takes More than Talent for the Game

Just Not Talent on How to Be a Golf Instructor

So you think you would like to teach golf to youthful or beginner golfers.  How to be a golf instructor can be a great experience, and nearly all golf instructors will let you know they like what they do.  But that is because golf teachers who don’t like what they do are not, or should not be golf teachers for long.  It certainly takes knowledge, experience and skill to instruct the game correctly.  But it also takes patience plus a passion for the game.  You must approach your craft with energy and enthusiasm, in addition to a genuine ability to like people despite all their faults and inconsistencies.

Vital on How to Be a Golf Instructor Is Knowing the Basics

Knowing the basics in every area in the game is vital.  One can find varying approaches to get to the identical point, such as the putting game, and it will be up to a good teacher to discover the path that every particular student can follow which is easiest for them.  That demands understanding dissimilar approaches to accomplish a similar thing, instead of a narrow, one-way fits all line of attack.  Knowing different ways to get a similar thing accomplished is something the golf instructor must be able to do which a ordinary player does not have to concern himself with.

Then you need to possess the “people skills”.  There’s a story of Lee Trevino, before he became known as a tour professional, was eking out a livelihood giving lessons, along with of course hustling (but that’s another story).  In getting exasperated with a golfer who was having difficulties, he advised the student to get rid of his golf clubs and give up the sport forever.  Obviously he was a terrific golfer but not a terrific coach.

Patience Is Necessary for How to Be a Golf Instructor

Patience is really a necessity  for every teaching job, and it has to run exceptionally deep.  Whenever you are attempting to teach a skill to someone who has absolutely no skill (and probably never will), if you worry about them receiving something from the sessions there is going to be frustrations.  Owning the wisdom to grasp what the learner will be skilled enough to achieving and trying to achieve that, and doing it with a cheerful attitude does require a special person.

Teaching Kids Golf

Teaching Kids Golf

The final point I wish to touch on is keeping an increased energy level.  Your student may show up at the golf course without a great deal energy, and although it can be annoying if they aren’t ready to do the task, the golf instructor will have to be prepared.  Recall back at school when a teacher would amble into the room prior to class looking like he were hung-over?  It straight away sent a sign to everyone in the class that nothing was going to get accomplished that day.  Being able to be enthusiastic about your craft, and then inspire enthusiasm with the student will be one of the foundation blocks to teaching.

Being a golf instructor may sound like a fun job, and it will be.  But it requires a special type of person.  There is an expression which states:  Those who can: Do and those who can’t: teach.  But the best teachers have to have some ability to “do”, as well as lots of other abilities that the “doers” of the world do not have to concern themselves with.

How to Improve Golf- Just a Few General Ideas

8 Ways to Enrich Your Game

Golfers receive vast quantities of recommendation and information on how to improve golf to make the game a better experience, and given that most of us would like to improve we will be on the watch for helpful ideas. Here I give some ideas on making the game of golf more enjoyable to you and also to people you are playing with.

How to Improve Golf to Make the Game Better

Golf Etiquette

Golf Etiquette

1. Get yourself a yardage book for your course. It really can get aggravating to a lot of golfers to keep getting asked the inquiry “How far do I have from here?” As a golfer it really is up to you to know.

2. Hire a caddy. I know it costs a tad, then he is the one who is going to know (or better know) the response to the question posed in number one. With my own individual experience playing using a caddy is easily the most pleasurable approach to play golf, and once he can examine your golf game a little will be capable of help in golf club choice. And as a bonus, many of these guys are filled with stories that make the round that much better.

3. Don’t fret about impressing your caddy, or anyone else. Regardless of how you are doing, every person within your grouping will have seen superior golfers than you, in addition to ones that are poorer.  Your golf psychology says to only think about what you can control.

4. Never carry the cell phone. This is probably tops on just about everyone’s list for annoyances on a golf course, and most of would agree that how to improve golf would be to turn them off or leave them in the car. Since practically everyone over the age of five has one at this time, there isn’t any need to impress. If you try to conduct business while you’re playing you probably should have finished your projects previous to coming to the course.

5. Know whenever it becomes your turn to hit, then be prepared. Everybody now seems to be playing under the rules of “ready golf”, so understand what the rules will be and make sure everyone with your group understands them. Do your preshot swing before it is time to hit.  It quicken your round greatly.

6. Watch where you tread on the surface of the golf green. Even utilizing the soft spikes we will wear these days, stepping onto another player’s line may cause a putt to turn off-line. But perhaps more than that is you have displayed disregard to other players. I know, it shouldn’t be that significant, but it just is.

7. Know when to pick up.  If you’re laying eight and in spite of everything are not close to the putting surface, it is not quitting to pick up your golf ball and renew the struggle on the next golf hole. Nobody wants to wait for no good reason, and trying to learn if you might score a twelve or a thirteen on the hole just isn’t a good reason. For handicap purposes, determine what your maximum total shall be on the hole, write it down and move on. And for how to improve golf, do not forget to tell the other members in the group your intentions.

8. Most of all have fun. That’s right, we compete at the golf course, but you should never make it look outwardly like you’re competing. We really must always attempt to make it a gentleman’s game.

How to Spin a Golf Ball to Make Your Shot Draw or Fade

Simple Ways How to Spin a Golf Ball

There are a few ways how to spin a golf ball.  If you were to ask nearly any golfer how to spin a golf ball, they’d almost certainly think you were discussing backspin.  Understanding methods to put adequate backspin on a golf ball can control your golf ball as it lands on the green, and if you are extremely talented at it you can make the golf ball reverse its direction and come back toward you.  That skill will come in handy with a tight pin placement, since you are going to be in a position to get the ball closer while your shot has more margin for error.

How to Feel a Real Golf Swing: Mind-Body Techniques from Two of Golf''s Greatest Teachers

How to Feel a Real Golf Swing: Mind-Body Techniques from Two of Golf”s Greatest Teachers

But more often we should visualize golf ball spin to form the ball for the route we would like it to go.  This definitely came in handy for Bubba Watson in the 2012 Masters, while on their sudden death hole he was required to knock the ball through trees, then suddenly hook it so it had a chance to get to the golf green.  As we know he made a great golf shot under pressure, advancing the ball to the green and then winning the Masters on the hole.

Spinning Your Ball Can Get You Out of Difficult Situations

Without being able to shape the ball left-to-right (Watson is left-handed) and hook it only the right amount, he probably would have lost the play-off on that hole.  The reason why he or any golfer can shape the golf ball in either direction will be, of course, his ability to spin the golf ball.  And much like putting backspin to a ball, it calls for practice and technique.  Whenever we observe our ball hook or slice out of bounds, we’ve either put excessive spin on the ball or spun the ball inadvertently.  Then we have to figure out the way not to slice.

A few golfers can hit the golf ball a good distance and drive it dead straight consistently, however incredibly few. With many of of us the normal golf swing is going to be somewhat inside-out, creating a draw, or outside-in, generating a fade.  If you are attempting to become too perfect and try hitting the ball in a straight line, nearly all of the time you will not achieve your objective and it’ll shape, or spin one way or the other.  One of the most disconcerting things which happens to a player is never knowing the direction the golf ball will shape.  This provides him small margin for error while lining the shot up.

Learn this Shot on the Driving Range

So at the driving range; make a decision if you would like the ball to draw or to fade.  Then proceed on how to spin a golf ball with the following list:

1.    Grip.  Provided you want to spin the ball to create a draw, use a powerful grip to help keep the club face slightly closed at ball impact.
2.    Alignment of the feet.  To produce a draw of the ball, close the stance a little.  This will maintain a swing pathway that will go starting inside the golf ball to outer throughout ball contact.
3.    Shoulder location.  For creating a draw, keep the front shoulder from opening up, keeping your club face progressing through the golf ball for a longer time through ball contact.

Clearly, to produce spin that will trigger the golf ball to fade, do the exact opposite of the above.  Shaping your ball left or right merely means spinning the ball clockwise or counterclockwise and only a small amount of spin is needed to successfully shape the ball left or right.

Drive it Longer- How to Get the Most Out of Your Drives

How to Get the Most Out of Your Drives

Nothing is more beautiful to a golfer than a high flying drive that travels over 250 yards and splits the fairway. Power and accuracy is key to great tee shots.  But how will you hit them long and straight consistently? To drive it longer all starts with the right grip, ball position and stance.

The first change you will likely intend to make to realize greater distance is to alter your grip. The longest hitters have quite strong grips which signify their lower hand is a bit more dominant in the swing. For left handed golfers this implies turning your left-hand clockwise to ensure that 2-3 knuckles are visible as the look down. Grip strength is decided whether your dominant hand is turned more right or left. For lefties a strong grip gets the left-hand covering more of the right hand while a weaker grip does not. A strong grip will promote a draw that can carry father and roll more once it releases as a result of top spin.

The Next Component of Longer Drives: Ball Position

Ball position is an additional key component that will determine your distance off the tee. You would like to have the ball elevate quickly, so using the driver from a tee will help lift the ball. For left handed golfers this means lining up the ball with the heel of the right foot. For tee shots you will probably want to tee the ball up rather high.

Another factor that will determine distance and direction from the tee is your golf stance. Much of your power comes from your legs so you need to set a solid foundation for your swing. The feet should be more than shoulder width apart and must encourage an extensive body turn.

Various Golf Grips

Whether you use the Vardon grip or the Interlock, your wrists need to be facing each other to form the proper golf grip. When you place your right-hand (for lefties) for the club, point your thumb all the way down the shaft to be sure that your wrist is correctly aligned and then just put the left-hand on the right. The wrist on the left hand must be on top of the shaft to insure the appropriate hinging through the swing.  The swing grip described above will allow you to attain the proper hinging of the wrist.
