Golf Chip Shots and How to Consistently Get them Close

How to Execute the Chip Shot

It seems as thought the golf chip shots are not discussed enough when it comes to golf advice. Unfortunately with all the talk about the “Ultimate Driver” and “you drive for show and putt for dough”, the part in the middle, your iron play gets neglected. Granted, those other areas are vital. But iron play is also very important, and speaking from experience it, along with sand play, can be an area where the mid to high handicapper will find the hardest to master. But by applying your chipping technique you will find that this part of your game is not that difficult with a little work.

Golf Chip Shots: They’re Not That Hard

There are many ways to successfully execute chip shots; in fact, as many ways as there are situations around the green. Let’s say you’re just a little off the green, but too much where you can’t use your putter. Take your wedge and basically execute a putting stroke, putting the ball in the air just enough to get it on the green. You will probably find that if you don’t “pop” your wrists, the ball will hit the green and start rolling like you had putted the ball.

But you will have to execute a different shot if you have an obstruction like a bunker in your path. Now you will have to hit a flop shot, perhaps using a lob wedge or sand wedge. Or if the pin is on the other side of the green, and you have a lot of green to work with you will look to execute a different kind of shot. This calls for the pitch and run, where the ball will hit on the green and roll toward the hole. This of course is not executed as a flop shot, because you want over-spin on the ball to make it run across the green.

I can work on a putting green executing these various shots for over an hour at a time, because they are really fun to learn. If you can execute all the varieties of chip shots there are, strokes are going to come off your game, big time, and your will be a strength. But most of it takes practice, and getting an understanding of what clubs work best for you for each shot, ball position in your stance, and how much wrist action you put into the shot. It is really a very enjoyable aspect of the game to work on.
